To help raise money for research for the cure of breast cancer, Roc'N Concerts will hold a silent auction at each concert. This is in honor of my sister, Theresa Bedard, a breast cancer survivor. The performer for that concert will autograph an item that will go up for auction. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Come to the concert and bid on an Autograph Guitar signed by a legend or a future legendary musician. Roc'N Concerts also wants to do more in helping the funding of Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition to the auction, Roc'N Concerts will donate 10 percent of profits. Also, 50 percent of profits of all sales of the Pink Roc'N Concert T-Shirts. |

FEATURED ARTISTJohnny Winter by Alan Kurzer photo by Alan Kurzer Jan 11, 2007 at Steppin'Out, the Legendary Beaumont,Texas guitar slinger Johnny Winter has been knocking 'em dead, ever since his high powered Columbia Records release way back in 1968.Over the years he has played or recorded with musical icons from the likes of Muddy Waters to Jimi Hendrix. Coming in from the blustery, cold winter night, music loving afficionados of all ages converged on Virginia Beach's Steppin' Out nightclub January eleventh for a hot, triple bill of guitar oriented sounds. Right out of the gate, our own local bluesy funmasters, Fat Tony Band showed the sold out crowd that "It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that swing". Supporting their home grown, hilarious "Blues ,Swing and Everything" cd,this quintet of comedic musicats mixed crunchy, electric six and tenor guitars, sizzling snare drum, Sandy's bluesy harp and Chris'cheap, ole'washtub bass for quite an energetic opening act set. Next local guit/pickin' phenom Jay Rakes and his trio plowed a rich, melodic fusion based instrumental path, leaving all of us wannabee guitarists hurriedly packing up our instruments. From the opening strains of Winter's gutsy take on Freddie King's instrumental gem "Hideaway",the standing, swaying Steppin' Out sellout crowd were treated to one blues highlight after another.Road manager/second guitarist Paul Nelson, who played briefly during this instrumental foray, departed the stage, leaving the supercharged rhythm crew of bassist Scott Spray and drummer Wayne June to soldier on the rest of the evening.Winter's Grammy nominated 2004 release, "I'm a Bluesman", is represented here by the heavy shuffling "Sugar Coated Love" and the all out roots rocking "Lone Wolf".Other musical milestones included the New Orleans rocking "Miss Ann",another oft covered Freddie King original,"I'm Tore Down", and the notable classic Willie Dixon slow blues, "Hoochie Coochie Man". Throughout the evening, I was just amazed watching him dig down deep on his custom made Lazer six string for his trademark, lip smacking sweet vibrato. From 1992's "Hey…Where's Your Brother?" recording ,Winter's tasty swing blues guitar driven, "She Likes to Boogie Real Low" and the ever rocking "Johnny Guitar" kept the music afficionados screaming for more. When Winter pulls out that historic Gibson Firebird, the assembled, ever standing, blues congregation were treated to slide guitar heaven featuring his gritty vocals and standout playing on the overdriving, critical mass "Mojo Boogie", followed by the vigorous, fret flying workout of Bob Dylan's nugget,"Highway 61 Revisited". From his captivating appearance here in Virginia Beach,Winter has clearly recovered from his broken hip and bout with carpal tunnel syndrome. All night long his inspired playing, soulful voice and determination were those of a seasoned musical veteran at the very top of his game. Also the best of luck and kudos to Mickey Hawks and her brand new Roc' N Concerts promotion company for the courage, conviction and foresight to bring this legendary musical figure to our area .
